Written by three career experts, An Intelligent Career is a playbook for the modern knowledge worker, providing a complete guide that will allow workers to take a composite, dynamic view of a life's work in the 21st century.

"Knowledge work" - the kind of work where one thinks for a living - is fundamental in today's economy. It is the basis for long-term success in the global economy and it drives the collective brainpower through which goods and services are delivered. And today, knowledge work requires much more than a college degree it means understanding the changing nature of work and employment, and the processes through which knowledge is generated, transferred, and applied. It means understanding new career possibilities, more dynamic work arrangements, and the growing demand for knowledge work around the globe. It means navigating work life with an authenticity that replaces any straightforward loyalty to a single employer, and instead calls for better understanding of the self, collaborators, clients, and customers. An Intelligent Career provides clear guidance on how to take charge of your own destiny, seek continuous learning, collaborate with others, recognize and act on fresh opportunities, determine when it is time to move on, and much more. Ultimately, the goal of this audiobook is to help knowledge workers from architects to lawyers learn to work on their own terms and to assume ownership of work and career.

An Intelligent Career is not a standard “finding the job for you” book; instead, it looks at many career related issues. It examines research related to each topic and guides you to ask questions of yourself. Along with the research, there are many examples. Well written, this book is not tedious to read. A great way to consider many of the issues surrounding careers. The book is meant to make you think; it is not a book of “tests” that you take which then give you the answers.

The authors themselves offer a very good summary of this book, which I copy for you here:

“In the first part of the book we help you take stock of your present situation. That is, we help you reflect on the education, relationships, and experiences you have accrued, and how they can contribute to your intelligent career. We do so through six chapters that ask successive questions about what an intelligent career means, or can mean, to you. Those questions are: “What does an intelligent career involve?” “Where do intelligent careers happen?” “Why do you work?” “How do you work?” “With whom do you work?” and “When do you change?... In the second part of the book we support you in taking action in your future intelligent career. That is, we help you change focus from where you are to where you want to go… In the introduction to Part I, we made reference to various debates about the future of work, and the importance of being aware of them. Here, we invite you to see yourself as both a subject of those debates and a contributor to their outcomes. You are making sense of your own place within the world of work, and doing things that respond to and reshape the technology, communities, and institutions with which you interact.”

If you are interested in having a fulfilling career, this book offers food for thought on how to go about achieving that.

An Intelligent Career Taking Ownership of Your Work and Your Life (Audible Audio Edition) Michael B Arthur Svetlana N Khapova Julia Richardson Stephen Paul Aulridge Jr Wetware Media Books Reviews

This is an eye opening book for a person that has worked for many years. Especially the baby boomer. We envisioned getting an education, working for an omniscient employer or several and eventually retiring. It’s not that straightforward. Gone in the employer that helps steer your career or offer the same loyalty it demands. It’s a new world out there, this book helps you take the reins.

This book starts, rightly so at the beginning
PART 1 TAKING STOCK
**** 1. What Does an intelligent Career Involve?
**** 2. Where Do Intelligent Careers Happen?
**** 3. Where Do You Work?
**** 4. How Do You Work?
**** 5. With Whom Do You Work?
**** 6. When Do You Change?

These all important questions help you decide what is important to you and why. Your motivations to work, how and why you work are all things that keep you happy.

PART 2 TAKING ACTION
**** 7. Making Sense
**** 8. Embracing Technology
**** 9. Investing in Communities
**** 10. Working with Employers
**** 11. Sharing Your Story
**** 12. Building Your World

If you are unhappy or want a change, it’s important not to dive in more of the same. Knowing your motivations and your needs is critical. Why have you moved in the past? How do you find a new job. I like the concept envisioned here, as a community of empowered individual employees. That would be further possible if Health Insurance was not such and all important variable.

Great book. It made me think of what is important to me and how the world has changed from what I started working. Very heartening but also eye opening.
Based on the title, I was hoping this book would help me to find a better work / life balance. However, that wasn't really the focus of the book. This book is more along the lines of providing a survey of topics related to making career decisions from a general perspective. There are specific sections that on any particular topic that you maybe be faced with, but if you are in the heart of a career and are just trying to make some specific decisions related to it you would be better served to research those specific areas.

This book seems more like it would be good for the following
* Anybody who is not really sure how to choose a career
* Anybody who is struggling to make sense of what factors they might consider when making career decisions
* A general academic study on a career decisions
This book is not a manual on finding a job or even choosing a career. It is a thoughtful guide to gaining insight into your own career goals and using that insight to define your path forward.

The first section focuses on assessing your goals and aspirations using behavioral and psychological studies as well as anecdotes from all over the world. The second section, while it says it focuses on action, is still not a how-to, practical manual. It is still a rather abstract guide to networking, technology and narrative

If you need a job NOW, this is not really the book you need. If you are looking for an insightful guide to help you define and pursue a meaningful career, this book would be very helpful.

There is a good notes section and useful index.
This a difficult book. It isn't difficult because of the writing or anything like that. It's difficult because of what it asks of the reader introspection, perspective, and deliberation.

It it's first part, the book has you thinking about such awkward things as your qualifications, experience, habits, motivations, associates, reputation, etc. (Why, how, and with whom). The book drills down so that these "taking stock" questions are really answered instead of simply glossed over. This is a difficult thing to do, but valuable.

After the "stock" is measured in the first part of the book, it's time to do something with that knowledge. Why go through the grief if there's no further purpose? It gets a bit squishy at this point in that the reader is encouraged to look for career themes and then to use the "how, why, and with whom" perspective for deciding what to do next.

I think this applies to more than just careers. It looks like an good paradigm and, for those who can consciously apply it, a very powerful tool.
